Am vergangenen Mittwoch, nach der gewaltsamen Räumung zweier Protestlager von Anhängern des entmachteten Präsidenten Mohammed Mursi durch Sicherheitskräfte, haben Islamisten gestern in Dutzenden von Städten Kirchen, Läden und Wohnhäuser von koptischen Christen in Brand gesetzt. Über 50 Kirchen verbrannt und beschädigt

 

Die Polizei räumte am Mittwoch gewaltsam mehrere Protestlager der Mursi-Anhänger in Kairo. Die darauf folgenden landesweiten Demonstrationen forderten mindestens 343 Todesopfer.

 

Auch auf zahlreiche koptische Einrichtungen und Gotteshäuser der katholischen Kirche wurden dabei gestern und in der Nacht Anschläge verübt.

 

Die Zahl der bestätigten Todesopfer steigt nach den seit Mittwoch andauernden Unruhen weiter an. Nach neuen Angaben der ägyptischen Regierung sind 300 der Toten Zivilisten und 43 Polizeimitarbeiter. Die mutmaßlichen Racheaktionen von Mursi-Unterstützern richteten sich sowohl gegen Regierungseinrichtungen als auch gegen koptische und katholische Christen. So berichtete die christliche Organisation „Maspero Youth Union“ auf ihrer Facebookseite: „Nachdem das ägyptische Innenministerium entschieden hat, die Sit-Ins der Muslimbrüder in Kairo aufzulösen, haben Unterstützer der Muslimbrüder in Oberägypten mit Vergeltung gegen koptische Christen begonnen“. Im Verlauf der Ausschreitungen griffen Islamisten landesweit etwa 35 koptische Kirchen an, wie die ägyptische Zeitung „Watani“ berichtete. Der Sprecher der Katholischen Kirche in Ägypten, Rafic Greiche, bestätigte 17 Übergriffe auf Gotteshäuser seiner Kirche. Weil die Gewalt nicht abbebte verhängte die Übergangsregierung gestern eine nächtliche Ausgangssperre und rief für einen Monat den Notstand aus. Die Anhänger des vom Militär entmachteten Präsidenten Mohammed Mursi harren seit dessen Absetzung am 3. Juli in zahlreichen Protestlagern aus, um seine Wiedereinsetzung zu erzwingen. Egypt’s churches under attack

 

Numerous Christian churches across Egypt were attacked on Wednesday and Thursday by mobs angered by the military’s armed crackdown on protesters in Cairo. The official death toll has passed 600; a state of emergency and curfew are in effect.

2. Assaults on Christian churches, community centres, businesses and homes have been widespread. There appears to be no central source of a precise accounting of the damage.

    

   Daily News Egypt, an English-language publication based in Cairo, on Thursday published a summary of what is known so far:

    

   The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a list of 35 incidents of attacks on Coptic Christians around the country that that was compiled on Wednesday by El-Watani weekly. It contains a list of churches, businesses and private homes of Coptic Christians. These were either set ablaze, attacked or looted. [Editors‘ note: the Watani list can be found in section 1a, below]

    

   Amira Mikhail the Egypt researcher for the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East also compiled a longer list with the assistance of Mai El-Sadany and Amir Beshay.  The list includes 45 churches and 11 Christian institutions.    According to Mikhail’s list, the worst affected governorate was Minya where approximately 12 churches were attacked, many of them set on fire along with attacks on two Christian-owned institutions. The list also includes attempted attacks on churches, such as the one on Saint Fatima Basilica in Cairo.

1. Watani International provided the following chronological tally, as of 7 p.m. Cairo time on Aug. 14, of assaults on Christian churches and other buildings:

    

   ·        Three churches and six buildings at the monastery of the 5th-century Monastery of the Holy Virgin and Anba Abra’am in Dalga, Minya, Upper Egypt. Father Silwanis Lutfi told Watani that the Islamists broke into the grounds. . . and set the churches on fire, as well as six buildings which house a clinic, a home for retreat, a pre-school nursery, and the bishop’s residence.

           A monk at the monestary, Fr. Angaelus Melek, told World Watch Monitor that many Christian residents have fled Dalga. The police station was attacked, he said, leaving the monastery without protection.

            A priest at the church, Fr. Samuel Aziz, told World Watch Monitor that he, his family, and the family of his brother — also a priest — had taken refuge in the home of a Muslim family. What happened to the church, Aziz said, was „like World War II.“

7. The Bible Society of Egypt said that its bookstores in Minya and Assiut (photo below) were burned out completely. Basem Shoukry, a Christian resident of Assiut, told World Watch Monitor that the mob threw the store’s bibles into the street, trampled them, then set them on fire.

   The Virgin Mary Church

    

   One of the churches on the Amira Mikhail list is the Virgin Mary Church, in the Hakim village of Cairo. Newsweek journalist Mike Giglio reported on the destruction of the church. By the timing of his tweets, it appears the attack occurred on Wednesday night, Egypt time.

    At aforementioned church, it was local Muslims who tried to defend it from attack by Islamists. They also protected Christian homes
    

     

    This can’t be stressed enough: when Christians are attacked by Islamists, it is often their Muslim neighbors who rush to their defense.
